ABOUT Us
Edmund Garwe Trust was established and named after Edmund Richard Mashoko Garwe, a disadvantaged boy from Wedza, Zimbabwe, who realized early on that his only way out of poverty was by virtue of his brain. Its the story of a little boy who walked barefoot to and from school and studied while herding cattle but grew up to stand beside presidents and eventually be Ambassador of Zimbabwe to the United States and later, Minister of Education.
Edmund Garwe Trust (EGT) is a family trust formed after Wadzanai Garwe, a trustee (Edmund’s eldest daughter), did her master’s Thesis on Violence And Abuse In Child-Headed Households. The Trust was then formed in 2008 in memory of her Father Edmund Garwe who believed in education as the vehicle to empowerment and independence. The organization was founded initially with the mission to bring hope and reintroduce fun into the life of the girl child headed households, orphan and/or vulnerable child. Our vision was to ensure that children's rights were respected and upheld such that children, particularly orphans and vulnerable children, gain access to their basic necessities and entitlements. It is important to note that the majority of orphans were orphaned because of HIV/AIDS and some of them were compromised. The Trust would provide them with counseling and encourage them to go for voluntary testing. The Trust also offered nutrition classes, basic education courses, and outdoor activities like netball and tennis. This was the dream. The girls would both play sports and get involved in a support group/girl talk group that enables them to share and interact with children in similar situations.
As the girls grew, as such so did we. Edmund Garwe Trust evolved to cater to their needs. We introduced more community based activities to help cater to the various needs of the community. Educational programs on healthcare and safety, counselling on how to manage illness, access to childcare centres and schooling for the girls. We established relationships with many more organisations in COMESA to help cater to our growing need. As such we opened up our trust to people from many walks of life. Our mission grew and the vision changed.
